Metropolitan Maltese Rescue (MetroMalts) was founded in 1998 by a group of Maltese dog lovers in New York City. When we discovered there were no organized Maltese breed rescue groups in the New York metropolitan area, we decided to do something about it and MetroMalts was formed. MetroMalts members are all volunteers with varying degrees of dog experience and different lifestyles. Our common bond is our love for the Maltese breed.

MetroMalts volunteers foster and place Maltese found as strays, surrendered by their owners, or rescued from shelters. We use every means at our disposal to keep Maltese out of shelters and in good forever-after homes. Every foster and permanent home is carefully screened, including a home visit. Information provided by potential adopters is used to make sure that our Maltese are placed with owners who are best suited to their individual personalities. We remain available after adoption to help owners quickly and effectively resolve any concerns or problems that might arise.

We gladly accept donations of time, professional advice and care (such as veterinarians and trainers), and financial assistance. We welcome people who just love the breed and want to help. After all, that's how MetroMalts began.

MetroMalts has developed this site with potential adopters in mind, but it is also a resource for anyone interested in animal rescue activities. We hope you will find something of value here no matter where you live, even though our focus is the NYC tri-state area. We will update the information provided here frequently, particularly our Available Dogs and News and Events, links. So, stop by often — you just might find a special furbaby to love.
